Position Description and Duties:
The Core Leadership Area Director provides oversight and direction on the Council for the Directors representing the seven areas SHRM has determined critical or core to the success of achieving its mission. (College Relations, Diversity and Inclusion, Government Affairs, SHRM Certification, Membership, SHRM Foundation and Workforce Readiness. The Core Leadership Area Director serves on the Executive Committee (and as an Officer of the State Council, pending Council Bylaws update)

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to each CLA Director.
  • Advise and update the Executive Committee and State Council on CLA activities, accomplishments, and needs.
  • Ensure CLA Directors attend their respective SHRM CLA webcasts/webinars.
  • Ensure awareness and alignment of Council CLA initiatives with SHRM initiatives.
  • Assist CLA Directors in creating realistic annual job previews beyond their job descriptions, using a template for consistency across positions.
  • Assist CLA Directors in creating an annual timeline for their role, in alignment with the SHRM Volunteer Leaders Playbook.
  • Facilitate a full CLA Director meeting session (biannual) to identify opportunities for collaboration and coordination.
  • Work with each CLA Director to create a positional succession list for their role or others in the Council that can be shared with the Executive Committee.
  • Work to transition and on-board new CLA Directors at the beginning of a new term or when an existing CLA Director needs to transition out unexpectedly.
  • Participate in quarterly one-on-one sessions with each CLA Director.
  • Backup CLA Directors, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the State Director.

  • Ability to advocate for the State Council and SHRM.
  • Ability to assist with recruiting potential WI SHRM State Council members.
  • Previous SHRM volunteer leader experience is preferred.

Requirements:
  • Must be a SHRM member in good standing. SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is highly desirable.
  • Regular attendance at State Council meetings is expected.
  • Serve as a member of planning committees, as needed.
  • Attendance at the Workplace Policy Conference, WI SHRM Volunteer Leadership Conference, State Conference, and annual Strategic Planning Meeting is expected.
  • Attendance at other WI SHRM events is highly recommended.
  • Attend SHRM meetings such as the Regional Council Meeting or Volunteer Leaders Business Meeting in place of invited CLA Directors, as needed.

Term:
  • Appointed by the State Director.
  • Serve a one-year appointment beginning the first day of January and ending the last day of December. May be reappointed for two additional terms for a total of three years.

Biography

Sheree Yates is a senior human resources leader with more than 25 years of experience in HR strategy, organizational leadership, and talent development. She currently serves as Senior Director of Human Resources for Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting educational and professional opportunities for individuals educated outside the United States.

Sheree brings strong experience in strategic planning, organizational change, leadership development, employee engagement, and benefits strategy. 

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and two graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville: a Master of Science in Organizational Change Leadership and a Master of Science in Strategic Management.

Sheree is a certified senior HR professional, holding both the SHRM-SCP and PHR credentials, and is an active leader within the Wisconsin HR community. She has served on the boards of the Racine/Kenosha SHRM Chapter, Milwaukee Metro SHRM, and the Wisconsin SHRM State Council, where she has held several leadership roles including Certification Director, District Director, Foundation Director, and CLA Director.

Sheree is actively engaged in academic and community service. She has served on boards for the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, Pius XI High School, and Forward Service Corporation, supporting education, workforce development, and community advancement.
