WI SHRM Hosts First-Ever Student Summit at UW-Whitewater, Connecting Future HR Leaders with Industry Experts
The Wisconsin State Council of SHRM (WI SHRM) hosted its inaugural Student Summit on April 5, 2025, at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater's Hyland Hall. This event brought together almost 50 student attendees from SHRM chapters and universities across the state for a full day of professional development, networking, and interactive learning designed to shape the future of human resources.
Organized in partnership with the UW-Whitewater SHRM Student Chapter and supported by SHRM volunteers, the summit featured an energizing schedule of panels, workshops, and competitions. The atmosphere was both educational and inspiring, creating unique opportunities for students to connect directly with HR professionals from across Wisconsin.
Key Highlights from the Summit:
- HR Games: The day kicked off with a spirited round of HR Games, where students tested their HR knowledge in a fun and competitive format. Questions covered everything from employment law to organizational development and some fun Wisconsin based trivia. Congratulations to Nicole Haugen, student at Western Technical College, for coming away with the win!
- Networking That Gets You Hired: A standout session led by Ty Day and David Wilson, who shared actionable strategies on how students can build a strong personal brand, maximize LinkedIn, and approach professional networking with confidence and intention.
- HR Career Path Panel: This interactive panel included insights from Stephanie Hartmann, Andrew Marcotte, and Crystal Fox. The panelists discussed their unique journeys into HR, the diverse roles within the profession, and advice for students navigating early career decisions.
- Breakouts: Attendees chose between three highly relevant and engaging workshops led by Faith Stipanovich, Jennifer Jirsa, and Sheree Yates with students praising the real-world application and timely advice given.
Breanna Techert, President of the UW-Whitewater SHRM Student Chapter, played a key role in organizing the summit and praised the enthusiasm of both students and professionals:
