Wisconsin SHRM Council’s third ‘Day on the Hill’ opens dialogue with state legislators
Human resource professionals from across the state gather at the capitol to meet with lawmakers

Madison, Wis. (January 18, 2017) – On Wednesday, January 18, members of the Wisconsin Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) organized and attended a ‘Day on the Hill’ event, with almost 40 human resource (HR) professionals meeting with state legislators.

Members of SHRM met with state legislators individually to discuss future partnerships in workforce planning and employment-related legislation. After meeting with a total of 18 Senate and 25 Assembly legislative representatives, SHRM members are optimistic about ongoing dialogue about essential workforce issues, including family and medical leave and workers’ compensation.

Elise Rommes, Legislative Affairs Director for Wisconsin SHRM, said, “It was exciting to have these discussions with legislators so soon after the 2016 elections. We are hoping that being there early in the year allowed us a better opportunity to make an impact on these key workforce issues. I’m looking forward to seeing what changes the legislation has in store for us in 2017.”

The morning of this daylong event included an update on the State of Business in WI from Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch; a legal overview of employment law with Attorney Bob Gregg, the Wisconsin SHRM Legislative Sponsor; analysis on the most recent election from Charles Franklin, Director of the Marquette Law School Poll; and a discussion with Jim Chiolino, Assistant Equal Rights Division Administrator and Director of the Labor Standards Bureau regarding emerging issues and trends in Wisconsin and federal wage and hour laws.

The day also included training and education on engaging with legislatures on Wisconsin SHRM’s behalf.
