WI SHRM Student Conference & Case Competition Recap!
On Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Moraine Park Technical College the Wisconsin State Council SHRM hosted its first EVER HR Case Competition & Student Conference! We were pleased to host 16 participants making up Undergraduate and Graduate student SHRM Members.

Agenda for the day included opening breakfast, the advisement of two keynote speakers, the actual case competition, lunch hour and networking experiences for all those in attendance.

We hosted a day where both SHRM student and Volunteer leader got to connect! Institutions represented included University of Wisconsin – Madison, University of Wisconsin – Parkside and an out of state entry from University of Texas Rio Grande! In alignment with SHRM’s philosophies around engagement for emerging leaders, WI SHRM received inquiries from other SHRM student chapters from other states looking for direction on how they can create their own event or even participate in ours! WISHRM leadership decided we would allow teams outside of the state to join us as the requirement from SHRM requires valid student membership to participate. We had 3 local colleges and 1 university from out of state compete.

In preparation for this event, all teams, selected captains, signed commitment forms to oversee group needs and agreed to as key communicator. Our four participating teams were given two weeks to prepare a response to the case information provided by national SHRM.

To open our morning, we had Neil Idhe of Life IQ serve as our morning Keynote where he made connections around Success and his Four Secrets to such. We then transitioned to the actual competition where we had WISHRM leadership Jen Jirsa, Membership Director, Connie Bitter, WI SHRM State Director and Jay Stephany, WI SHRM Certification Director served as our illustrious judging panel. In preparation for their time as judges they reviewed the case, team requirements and were ready to provide evaluation to those competing.

Following the actual competition, we transitioned into our afternoon keynote where Dorothy Enriquez of Ellevate Collective gave us conversation about confidence and provided each participant with a copy of her new book!

Following a delicious Italian lunch, we went into a session where we connected with students on “What Can SHRM Do”, where we compiled thoughts around how both national and WI SHRM can provide better student engagement.

Finally, judging took place! WI SHRM awarded $2,350 in cash prizes to the winning teams for 1st - 3rd Place. Winners are as follows:

UWM – Madison SHRM – 1st Place
UWM – Madison – Badger HR Stars – 2nd Place
University of Texas Rio Grande – 3rd Place

This event would not have been possible without the contributions of over 10 WI SHRM volunteers that attended and provided support, conversation and company to students attending.

Following the close of the competition, College Relations for WISHRM distributed a survey following the event for feedback and mentions. Feedback from this session will be integrated in the next event and throughout College Relations as WISHRM looks to better engage students.

We are proud to have had a successful event for our first time having it in the State of Wisconsin!
