Biography:Ben Merens is a former public talk radio host of 20-plus years and a professional speaker whose expertise centers on empathic listening skills. Ben currently is the media director for Vistelar, a Milwaukee-based conflict management training firm that teaches "Verbal Defense and Influence." Ben's role at Vistelar includes: running Podcast Network International; overseeing Vistelar's speaker's bureau and serving as its lead speaker; and heading Vistelar's "Story Your Business" program to help firms tell their story via technology, media avenues, and through good, old fashioned conversation.

Program Overview:Treat People With Dignity and Show Them Respect. This is at the heart of Verbal Defense and Influence. Coping with conflict isn't an option but a necessity on the job today and VDI has a 30-year track record of success in the fields of business, health care and law enforcement.
Learning Objective 1:The Universal Greeting: this initial interaction tool is critical to the non-escalation of conflict and the practice of Verbal Defense and Influence.
Learning Objective 2:The Five Maxims: These are at the heart of treating people with dignity and showing them respect. Simply stated, they include: 1. Listening 2. Asking, not telling 3. Explaining why 4. Giving options 5. Allowing for a second chance
Learning Objective 3:Making sure no matter how a conflict concludes, that you look good in how you handled it. Sometimes conflicts end badly, but individuals in the aftermath and reporting stage need to show they did all they could to handle things well.
